Cuisine from the East!

As the name of this post suggests, here is the much anticipated food post!

Now, I’m sure that many, if not all of you are aware that the “Chinese” food that you order in America is almost never anything like actual Chinese food – unless of course you dive deep into the China towns of New York, LA, or Philly along with a Chinese friend. Also, I’m sorry to say you’re not going to be seeing any pictures of General Tso’s chicken in this post either! 😛

So, as of right now, I’ve been living in China for exactly five weeks! I’m happy to say that in most aspects of my life, I have been able to establish what you might be able to consider a “groove.” That is, except when it comes to grocery shopping and cooking. From experience, I know that getting the hang of grocery shopping in a foreign country takes time. I’m working no it. And naturally, cooking cannot ensue before grocery shopping – it’s not nearly as confusing as the chicken and the egg conundrum… For those of you who followed my Japan blog, you’ll know that I do love to cook. So be prepared for a separate post on that later on down the road.

Until such a time as I can get a grasp on shopping here, I’ll “settle” for eating out. Fortunately, it doesn’t break the bank (at all!), and it’s pretty damn delicious! Here follows my culinary escapades so far in China!

I’ll start with my new favorite breakfast in the world! It is composed of a flakey, pastry-esque tortilla thingy that has two eggs cooked onto it; then it’s brushed with a savory sauce, has a bit of sliced crispy cabbage thrown on top, then is rolled up and made to-go! I was walking, so the pic is a bit blurry 😥

Next is my new favorite lunch of all-time – ruo jiang mian – or minced meat noodle soup! The pictures say it all, except for the fact that the whole bowl costs less than two American dollars!!! ❤

Next up is the world famous hot-pot of China! Our personal favorite in the area gives us each our own personal pot in which we can put whatever we choose from among the shared assorted ingredients – of which there are plenty!

A slight variation to the traditional hot-pot, and a close second, is the Korean-style hot-pot! Comes altogether in one big bowl: shrimp, noodles, muscles, ham, cheese, eggs, beef, veggies, and some sort of rice thing… 😀

Here is a typical, regular, everyday style dish that you can find in almost any Chinese restaurant. Peppers and pork in the form of what we know as thick-cut bacon! Maybe not the best thing for you, but it is spicy, and damn delicious!

This is some sort of fish that has been breaded and fried in some unique way that allows you to pick off little pieces at a time… I really don’t understand how they did it, but it was great!

Of course, you can’t forget about the dumplings! Cheap, there’s lots of ’em, and of course they’re homemade and delicious!

Almost last, but FAR from least is a night in which we were taken out by my colleagues’ friends that currently live in Shanghai but were in town visiting a few weeks ago. They took us to a really nice restaurant and ordered what seemed to be one of everything on the menu! She was ordering for a FULL 7 minutes!!!? At one point, one of them disappeared. We asked where she had gone to, and the other said that she went to go pick out our fish!

An honorable mention, is a great night we had at a down and dirty location on our local market street where we were seated at a pop-up table on the sidewalk. We had great BBQ!
